How to Do a Complete Format on a Laptop

So your laptop has slowed down and you don’t know what to do about it. Maybe you’ve just installed too many programs, or maybe there is some malicious software infecting your system. Or maybe your system registry has just become overgrown. Whatever the reason, your laptop has become sluggish and you want it to get back to its original level of performance.

You can get things up and running again at full speed if you reformat your laptop entirely. It saves your laptop and gets it working like it did when you first purchased it. You have to be careful, however, because a step format like this has a lot of steps involved. You could end up losing your data or being unable to get your operating system back if you miss even one crucial step. To start with, make sure you have all the necessary software to restore your computer and then use either a Windows operating system installation disc or a recovery disc to format your hard drive and install Windows again.

Windows Product Key

Before you format your computer, make sure you have the product key for the Windows operating system installed on your computer. If Windows was pre-installed when you bought your laptop, then the product key will be on a sticker at the bottom of the laptop.

Ability to Reinstall Windows

Make sure you’re capable of reinstalling Windows. To start with, you need to have either the recovery disc or a Windows installation disc on your laptop. If the laptop does not have a physical disc, then it likely has all the files it needs on a hidden recovery partition in the hard drive. You need to confirm the existence of this partition using a keyboard shortcut upon booting your computer. The shortcut is usually displayed on the startup screen and is commonly either F8 or F10. Your computer should also be able to burn the system files onto a blank disc, such as a DVD.

Can Reinstall Programs

Next, you need to check that you have all the driver discs and software to reinstall your hardware device drivers and programs. If some of your programs came from the internet, download their installation files and save them to a flash disk or other storage device.

Backup Your Data

You need to back up all of the data sitting on your hard drive. There are plenty of free programs that allow you to do this and some paid ones as well. If you don’t have a large enough external hard drive to hold all the backed-up data then you can back them up to a cloud account such as Google Drive or back up only the important files. Try not to forget anything important, as formatting your laptop will remove all the data on your hard drive.

Format Your Laptop and Reinstall Windows

You can now insert the Windows installation disc or use a recovery disc. If you’re using the recovery partition, restart your laptop and immediately press the keyboard shortcut that is displayed on your screen. All you have to do now is follow the instructions on the screen and perform a full system recovery or install Windows. Your laptop will be restored to its original state.
